VELU NACHIYAR – The great Tamil warrior
Before Jhansi Rani
took up the sword,
Velu Nachiyar’s name
was heard and adored.
Born of Ramnad,
Tamil Nadu’s light,
A queen who rose
for freedom’s fight.
Trained like a warrior,
her parents’ pride,
She mastered the arts
with fire inside.
With sword in hand,
and heart so brave,
She stood for justice,
her land to save.
Trained in combat,
swift and keen,
With sword and bow,
she ruled the scene.
On horse she rode,
in armor bright,
A queen who knew
no fear or flight.
With silambam’s skill,
and Valari’s might,
She stood steady
for her people’s right.
An intellect, sharp
with wisdom’s light,
Master of words,
in languages bright.
She built an army,
fierce and strong,
Of women warriors,
who sang freedom’s song.
In 1780, she led
the fight,
Against the British,
with all her might.
One of her followers,
brave and true,
Drenched herself
in flames and blew,
She set the
British armory alight,
A sacrifice made,
in the dead of night.
Velu Nachiyar,
with victory in hand,
With Sultan Hyder Ali,
she made her stand,
Together they reclaimed
her Sivaganaga land.
To Hyder Ali,
her thanks to show,
A mosque she built,
in her kingdom’s glow.
The Sultan, touched
by her noble heart,
In his palace,
he played his part.
A temple he raised,
with love and care,
A bond of respect,
forever to share.
With valor unmatched,
her rule began,
A legacy written by
her command.
Velu Nachiyar,
a beacon of light,
Who led her people
in the darkest night.
A queen of courage,
skill, and grace,
Her name forever
time will trace.
